15 March 2024, The Australian Government has implemented reforms to update the National Classification Scheme. The changes reduce unnecessary regulation and reduce costs by allowing industry to self-classify films and computer games using accredited classifiers. The Classification Board will continue to play an important role in oversight of industry self-classification decisions, with the ability to replace an industry self-classification decision if needed. Other reforms allow content classified for broadcast to be shown in non-broadcast formats using the same classification and expanding exemption from classification for certain low-risk content. Public consultation will begin shortly to guide the next phase of classification reforms. The goal is to clarify the scheme’s purpose and scope, establish appropriate regulations, and enhance its responsiveness to community standards. Find out more Read the Minister’s Media Release
