23 March 2026, The National Classification Scheme applies ratings to films, certain books and computer games, to support Australians to make informed choices about what they and their families read, hear, watch and play. Previous reviews have found the scheme has not kept up with developments in the Australian media environment, and that the classification guidelines should be updated to better reflect changing community sentiment. This is part of the government’s two-stage process to reform the scheme, and builds on a consultation undertaken in 2024. The current consultation calls for public submissions on potential updates to the classification guidelines, as well as suggestions to improve the way communities can interact with classification ratings. Submissions close on Monday 4 May, 11:59pm. More information
